The Divine Liturgy
The Divine Liturgy, or Holy Eucharist, is the central service of the Orthodox Church. “Eucharist” means thanksgiving, and “liturgy” means the work of the people: we come not as spectators but as one community offering worship to the Holy Trinity.
Most Sundays we celebrate the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. The Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is offered ten times a year, and during Great Lent the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is celebrated on weekdays.
Sunday worship begins with Orthros (Matins), a service of psalms, hymns and the Resurrection Gospel. Vespers and feast-day services prepare us for the great days of the Church year.
