NEW LIFE IN CHRIST
Baptism at St. Nectarios
Through Holy Baptism and Chrismation, a person is united to Christ and received into the sacramental life of the Orthodox Church.

Begin With the Parish Priest
Parents planning an infant baptism, or adults seeking to enter the Orthodox Church, should contact the Parish Office before selecting a final date or making arrangements.
The priest will explain preparation, eligibility, registration documents, the role of the sponsor and the items needed for the service. An orientation meeting with the parents and sponsor is required.
Adult Baptism and Reception
Adults prepare through a period of instruction and pastoral guidance. Depending on prior Christian baptism, reception into the Church may take place through Baptism and Chrismation or through Chrismation.
The Sacrament
Baptism is both a death to the old life and a new birth in Christ.
Making of a Catechumen
Prayers of renunciation and faith prepare the candidate to be united to Christ.
Blessing of the Water
The baptismal water is blessed as the place of cleansing, burial and new birth.
Triple Immersion
The candidate is immersed three times in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Chrismation
The newly baptized is sealed with Holy Chrism and receives the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Tonsure and Garment
The white garment expresses new life, and the tonsure is an offering of the self to God.
Holy Communion
The newly illumined is received into the Eucharistic life of the Church.
Sponsor and Preparation
The sponsor accepts a serious spiritual responsibility.
Orthodox Sponsor
The godparent must be an Orthodox Christian in good standing and a supporting member of a canonical parish.
Church Marriage Status
A married sponsor must have a marriage blessed by the Orthodox Church and any required ecclesiastical divorce.
Ongoing Relationship
The sponsor helps the baptized person grow through prayer, worship, example and participation in parish life.
Common Items for an Infant Baptism
The priest will provide the final parish checklist. Typical items may include:
- A cross and chain for the child
- A white baptismal garment and change of clothing
- A large white bath towel and smaller hand towels
- A white sheet or receiving cloth
- Olive oil and an appropriate container
- A baptismal candle and any approved decorative items
Photography and Guests
Photography should be respectful and coordinated with the priest. Guest clergy may participate only with advance approval.
Scheduling Notes
Baptisms are not performed during Holy Week or on Great Feast Days of the Lord. Parish worship schedules and clergy availability must also be considered.
