Growing in Faith Together

St. Nectarios Sunday School provides children and young adults with a welcoming, engaging and spiritually enriching environment in which to learn about the Orthodox Christian faith.

Classes are offered for students in Pre-K through 12th grade, with lessons designed for each age and stage of development. Through Scripture, worship, discussion, service and fellowship, students learn how the teachings of the Church can guide them in their everyday lives.

Schedule and Registration

Sunday School is held each Sunday following Holy Communion and continues until 11:30 a.m.

There is no fee to participate, but every student must be registered.

Our Mission

The mission of St. Nectarios Sunday School is to help young people understand, experience and live their Orthodox Christian faith.

Lessons introduce students to:

  • Gospel readings and the teachings of Jesus Christ
  • The lives of the Saints
  • Feast days and traditions of the Church
  • Parables and Holy Scripture
  • Orthodox prayer and worship
  • Christian service, generosity and compassion
  • Applying the teachings of the Church to everyday life

Our teachers strive to make Sunday School enjoyable, meaningful and appropriate for each student’s age.

Our Teachers and Families

St. Nectarios is blessed with 23 volunteer Sunday School teachers who share more than 200 years of combined teaching experience.

Parents and guardians are the first teachers of the faith. Through their words, actions and participation in the life of the Church, families plant the first seeds of spiritual growth. Our Sunday School teachers build upon that foundation by helping students deepen their knowledge, ask questions and grow in their relationship with Christ.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Sunday School students participate in a variety of programs and activities throughout the year, including:

Students in grades 5 through 12 may participate by preparing speeches, essays, poetry, icons, vocal performances or Byzantine chanting. Participants may also qualify for scholarship opportunities through the Metropolis and Archdiocese.

An annual Saturday of Lazarus or Holy Friday Retreat helps students explore the meaning of Holy Week, Christ’s Passion, the services of the Church and the celebration of Pascha.

Hymnology classes introduce students to the hymns and chanting traditions of the Orthodox Church. Students may also be invited to sing with the parish choir on the first Sunday of the month.

Students take part in donation drives, service projects and other opportunities to care for those in need. High school students also participate in Service Sundays, helping with important responsibilities that support parish life.

Third-grade students study the meaning of the Nicene Creed and work toward memorizing it by the end of the school year.

The annual Christmas Pageant gives students an opportunity to share the story of Christ’s Nativity with the parish. Students also participate in a Christmas Retreat during the rehearsal period.

Each summer, Vacation Church School offers a one-week, half-day program centered on an Orthodox Christian theme. Students enjoy faith-based lessons, activities and fellowship with other Orthodox children.
